What is Nexium?

Nexium (esomeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor that treats GERD and other stomach problems by reducing the amount of gastric acid produced by the stomach. The medication effectively alleviates the symptoms of heartburn, helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, prevents ulcers, and reduces the risk of esophageal cancer.

Nexium was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001. By 2008, it was the third best-selling drug in the world. An over-the-counter-version, Nexium 24HR, was launched in 2014.

Proton pump inhibitors were used by more than 15 million Americans in 2013. However, recent research suggests that 70% of these prescriptions are inappropriate. The same study found that a quarter of all long-term users could stop taking the medications without an increase or recurrence of their heartburn symptoms.

What are Nexium Lawsuits About?

A number of studies published in recent years suggest that proton pump inhibitors can harm the kidneys, especially when taken for long periods of time:

  • A study published in CMAJ Open in April 2015 suggested that seniors treated with proton pump inhibitors were 2.5 times more likely to experience an acute kidney injury, or the abrupt loss of kidney function.
  • In January 2016, research published in JAMA Internal Medicine reported that using proton pump inhibitors might increase a patient’s risk of chronic kidney disease by as much as 50%.
  • In April 2016, a study that appeared in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology suggested that proton pump inhibitor users had a 96% increased risk of developing kidney failure compared to patients who used alternative heartburn drugs like Zantac.

In 2014, the FDA also ordered the manufacturers of prescription proton pump inhibitors to add information about acute interstitial nephritis to their product labels. This sudden inflammation of the kidneys can progress to kidney disease and renal failure if not recognized and treated quickly.

As a result of this accumulating evidence, Nexium lawyers around the country have  begun filing lawsuits on behalf of proton pump inhibitor patients who went on to develop  serious kidney problems. These lawsuits accuse the drugs’ manufacturers of failing to provide patients and doctors with adequate safety warnings, despite  an increasing number of reports linking the medications to kidney failure, chronic kidney disease and other renal complications.`
